What Is Heat-Engineered Timber?
Sumika® Heat-Engineered Timber Cladding has been developed as a technically advanced alternative. It combines precision burning surface texturing with heat-engineering up to 300 degrees C. Producing a consistent, tactile finish engineered for long-term external performance and Impact Resistant.
As the timber is exposed to high temperatures, its moisture absorption characteristics are reduced, resulting in improved dimensional stability and a lower tendency to expand and contract in response to changing weather conditions. The process also increases the timber's natural durability, making it better suited to long-term exterior applications. It's a thermally modified cladding material with a rich, architectural appearance without relying on a fragile surface carbon layer.

The Limitations of Heavy Charred Timber Cladding
Traditional charred timber cladding, including deep-burn finishes, achieves its dramatic appearance through a heavily carbonised surface layer. While this can Look amazing, the carbon layer itself can be delicate and susceptible to wear over time.
During installation and throughout the life of the building, heavily charred surfaces may be more vulnerable to abrasion, surface transfer, and uneven weathering, particularly in environments exposed to rain and unpredictable weather. As a result, maintaining the appearance of deeply charred timber often requires a lot of maintenance.
Sumika® takes a different approach, creating depth and texture through heat-engineering rather than relying on surface carbonisation. This allows the cladding to achieve a similarly bold architectural character while offering a more robust and predictable, long-term finish.
